2010 Citizen of the Year:  Ronnie Friedman

Ronnie Friedman, director of Westminster Cares since 2001, was named Westminster Citizen of the Year by the select board at Westminster's Town Meeting.

“We greatly appreciate the many years of dedicated service that Ronnie has given to Westminster Cares and to the senior citizens in town,” said Paul Harlow, chairman of the select board.

Before Friedman began working for Westminster Cares, she was nutrition director at the Council on Aging for Southeastern Vermont for more than 25 years.  In 1974, she moved from New York City to Westminster West, where she lives with her family.

“The award is actually for all the volunteers who spend lots of hours working for Westminster Cares – they are the ones who really make me look good,” Friedman said.

This is the fourth year that the Citizen of the Year Award as been given out.  Previous honorees were Sam Streeter, Hank Anderson and Walt Jennison.

The select board asks for nominees for the award in the fall.   Award winners receive a plaque, a clock and their names are engraved on a large plaque in the town hall.

Westminster Cares is a local organization that creates opportunities for seniors and disabled adults to live with independence and dignity in the community. Some of its programs are Meals on Wheels, Strong Living classes and visiting elderly and shut-in residents. Volunteers are always welcome. Contact Friedman 722-3607 or by email at wecares@sover.net.
